#scheme IRC channel update Wolfgang Corcoran-Mathe 26 May 2021 18:32 UTC

Hi all,

As you may have heard, Freenode, the IRC network which hosts the
primary Scheme IRC channel, #scheme, has been in a state of upheaval
over the past week. In preparation for possible changes to Freenode's
policies, a few of us registered a "backup" #scheme on
irc.libera.chat, the new IRC network operated by ex-Freenode staff.
As more worrying reports began to appear, I adopted the goal of slowly
migrating the channel to Libera entirely. At around 03:00 UTC today,
#scheme on Freenode was seized by staff, leaving the new Libera channel
as the only instance of #scheme controlled by our community.

Our determination, thus far, is to make the Libera channel the
continuation of #scheme. A matter on which we have not reached a
decision is whether to attempt to regain control of the old #scheme
channel. If this were to happen, though, my hope is that we could
agree to deprecate the Freenode channel and to encourage any remaining
users to migrate. Events have shown, I think, that the "new" Freenode
is not a reliable home for our channel.

Clearly this is only tangential to the SRFI process; however, since a
fair amount of SRFI discussion occurs on IRC, I believe that the SRFI
community should be made aware of the situation. If you have opinions
on this, please join us on IRC in Libera #scheme to discuss them, so
that the noise on srfi-discuss can be limited.

I'm very sad to see a channel which has been a home to me and to other
Schemers scuttled in such an abrupt manner, but that the community has
endured and stuck together through this is truly heartening.

Best regards,

Wolfgang / Zipheir, operator on #scheme
