One thing that could be done is to have a list of known keywords to group packages. For example, all packages with "graphics" in the name or description would be included in a graphics group. All packages with "network", "socket", "tcp", "client" "server" would go into a networking group. Etc. This would be easy to do and probably a good approximation of useful categories for people to browse packages.
