OK, you and Wolfgang both voted for chat.scheme.org so let's go with it.
I think it makes sense, too.
We can make irc.scheme.org an alias if people want it; we already alias
blog.scheme.org -> planet.scheme.org, for example.

That's a good principle.
It's not trivial to figure out good URLs for the channels. Channels
sometimes move between IRC networks, or exist on two networks at once. A
recent example is the move of #scheme and others from Freenode to Libera
Chat. A channel is defined more by the set of people in it, than what
network is hosting it at any given time.

Our page https://community.scheme.org/ currently links to
https://web.libera.chat/ which claims to be Kiwi IRC. Their copy of Kiwi
is modded to say "Try an experimental, light-weight client: Gamja".
We could also offer a choice of several clients.
