As the author of the first MicroXML parser (in Java), what I would do here is to translate <https://github.com/jclark/microxml-js> into Scheme.  I guarantee it will be much less buggy than anything done from scratch.  ("If you think James Clark is wrong about a matter of fact, you should think more than twice before saying so.")

I have some ideas on that which I will try to post when I get some time for it.
