To quote John's answer: "I suppose so, at least as alternatives."

Consistent library naming conventions would be very welcome, but I'd
advise saving that effort until a late stage in the standardization
process. The reason being that it's in large part a R6 vs R7 issue.

Until there is a critical mass of people actively solving the 6/7 split,
it will be difficult to establish either singular or plural as the norm.
Some divergence and back-and-forth renaming is likely to occur.

On a statistical basis, RnRS choosing plural would necessitate the least
amount of renaming/aliasing: only for (scheme char) and (scheme file).
