Shiro:  Before Arthur notified me of the pull request, I had already
made similar (but of course not exactly identical) changes to the code.
I adopted your tests as indicated and sent Arthur the modified code and
tests.  The technique of using `values` as a substitute for `identity`
is one that I had not seen before.

Arthur, you can go ahead and post what I sent you.  The pull request is
no longer necessary.
