Not that I claim to speak for Brad, but it seems to me that what they
share is a single algorithm that, given an index tuple, produces a
single integer from it (and from the array's properties) that when
passed to the backing store will produce the corresponding array element.
Non-fixed arrays don't in the general case use this algorithm, and may
not even have a backing store.
