There was consensus among everyone I asked in that (set! (~ object
field) value) is preferable to (set! object field value).

There was one objection to using punctuation syntax like ~, which is
unfortunate but not critical.  I believe most Schemers will agree that
heavy punctuation syntax on the level of Haskell (let alone APL) is
undesirable, but a piece of punctuation here and there for very common
concepts (like "field of a collection object") should be acceptable.
