The end of the Julian period (December 31st, A.D. 3267 (Julian)) is far
away enough for normal date calculations and advanced calculations, and
its RD, JD, and MJD representation fits in a fixnum.
I will add that if an implementation cannot represent a date, it must
signal an error.

A typo. It's 22 bits + 1 sign bit.
