I applied a number of fixes suggested by Amir Livne Bar-On (many
thanks), and made the change from u8vectors to blobs.  The latter is
mostly a search-and-replace operation.

This clears my plate of changes I want to make, and I think I've made
most changes people have suggested---if you'd like to me to make some
more, now would be a good time to speak up.
