I think this may be suboptimal because it provides poor feedback to
people making legitimate posts without being subscribers. They may
never know their message was rejected.

Could you instead block non-subscribers early, even at the SMTP
dialog?

I run several large mailing lists and use postfix plugins to block
non-subscribers from posting to them at the SMTP dialog. This means
that people posting in error get prompt error messages *and* that my
SMTP queues remain clean.
