When "buffers" become established, it won't be more problematic than
the term vector (for which it is also not exactly clear what it means
unless you have already seen (Scheme) vectors).

The nice thing about "buffer" is that "charbuffer", "bytebuffer",
"u32buffer" are still reasonably simple, compared to, say,
"chararraylist".

The German term for "array" is "Feld", which has the same roots as
"field"; that's why the notion came to my mind. But it is indeed an
overloaded term. We also have fields in the sense of algebra.
