Having waited a lot for C++ compiles, I do not consider these efficient.
They *are* runtime efficient, but they have a huge compile-time cost.

Also because compile-time can be during runtime for Scheme (for example
when you use a macro in a lamda), the optimal idiom will likely be
different than C++.

I agree, but don’t really know a good solution.

I’d love to have one, though, because I miss the ergonomics of generic
functions I used to use in Python.

Maybe something could be done with pulling inner type-checks to outer
scope, so you don’t get dynamic dispatch on single procedures (maybe in
a tight loop) but on larger codeblocks (so the tight loop itself would
use the optimized procedures directly)?

Best wishes,
Arne
