I agree with this. Many editors can just replace "(lambda" with "(λ",
I've had this for at least a decade, ultimately I believe this is just a
presentation issue, the underlying code should be the same everywhere
(whether it is "lambda" or "λ" doesn't matter so much, but given the
pre-existence of a lot of code that has "lambda" I'd just argue for
keeping that).

I've played around with an APL-layer, which just has the APL operators
(as an example of strange-looking operators), non-ascii function names
worked in all the handful of implementations I tried it with.
