Indeed… all forms of waiting for availability of I/O including timeouts must be integrated in the thread system.  This usually means funnelling all of this through select/poll on Unix (MsgWaitForMultipleObjects on Windows).  As soon as you make an exception, you need to use polling which is not scalable in general.
